The National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRCT) issued a statement dated 29 June 2019 to express great concerns for a political activist, Mr. Sirawith Serithiwat, who had been physically attacked by a group of men in public area of Bangkok and in broad daylight of 28 June 2019.
The NHRCT denounced all forms of violence and emphasized the need to respect human dignity, rights and equal liberties for all people in society, urging people to respect different opinions of others and their exercise of rights, freedoms of expression and political activities. Otherwise, nobody can live safely when owning different views from others. In the statement, the NHRCT issued recommendations as follows:
            1. Urging the government to speed up the investigation of this case and other previous cases of assaults on political activists, bringing the assailants to justice and clarifying their aim and motivation of the attacks. The NHRCT also urged the government to provide remedies rapidly and fairly for the victims.
            2. Calling for responsible agencies to intensely monitor and prevent the use of hate speech through social media since it could bring about more tension and intolerance in society.
            3. Calling for people and all sectors in the society to respect rights and freedoms of expression in accordance with the laws, accepting different views, denying violence and hate speech to bring back the previous Thai society of tolerance and compassion.
